AI Meets Scenario-Based Development: Rediscovering Joy in Writing

Writing about our experiences in the field and reflecting on the lessons we’ve learned is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. Crafting case studies, in particular, stands out as an enjoyable journey. It begins with recounting challenges faced by teams or clients and delves into identifying root causes of the issues. Looking back on these scenarios with the benefit of hindsight always brings clarity and a renewed sense of purpose.

There’s great satisfaction in describing solutions to these challenges—solving puzzles and sharing those solutions so others might benefit from them. That feeling of solving a problem and helping others avoid similar pitfalls is deeply fulfilling.

Yet, no article is complete without a summary and conclusion. For me, this has often been the sticking point. Writing the body of an article, where I get to explore the story and the lessons, comes naturally. But when it’s time to distill everything into a few succinct closing sentences, my enthusiasm dwindles.

Before AI tools like ChatGPT, this was a significant hurdle. I would procrastinate, struggle, and spend more time agonizing over the conclusion than it took to write the rest of the article. It highlighted a fundamental difference: the joy of doing what we love versus the obligation to conform to certain norms.

While I still don’t love writing summaries, I’ve come to appreciate their importance in giving readers closure and helping them connect with the article’s main points.

Using ChatGPT for this part has been a game-changer. The tool generates conclusions that match the voice and tone of the article seamlessly.

I might argue that it often articulates the key takeaways more elegantly than I might have.

But what matters most is that I can now focus on the parts I genuinely enjoy: storytelling, problem-solving, and sharing insights. With AI providing support for the less exciting aspects, I’ve found a way to create content I’m proud of while staying true to what fuels my passion.

This article carries two key takeaways. The first is that AI undeniably enhances our experiences, helping us become more effective and fulfilled professionals.

But there’s another layer to this story—how I uncovered the challenge in my own process and found a solution.

By applying scenario-based development to my writing routine, I recognized that my enjoyment and frequency of writing had diminished. Breaking down my workflow, I identified the root cause: summarizing.

Crafting conclusions, while essential, had become a bottleneck that drained the joy from an otherwise rewarding process. It was clear that the conclusion couldn’t be rushed or treated as an afterthought without impacting the overall quality and flow of the article.

The real challenge was ensuring that the same level of engagement carried through to the very end.

That’s where AI came in. By taking over the part of the process that felt like a chore, AI allowed me to focus on what I truly love—exploring, reflecting, and storytelling.

It didn’t just save time; it reignited my passion for the entire journey of writing.

While we do use scenario based development mainly in the software development process, sometimes, it is fun to take a new perspective. It enriches the process and makes it easier to describe to people who didn’t yet use it as part of their software development process.
